ExposureSource Database

The RMS® ExposureSource database supports RMS Data Quality Analytics by delivering comprehensive and validated building attribute data to assess and improve the quality of exposure data. The database consists of location-specific commercial and residential property exposure data compiled from a number of third-party databases, and validated through extensive field surveys, satellite imagery, photographs, research, and other sources.

The ExposureSource database is comprised of multiple independent data sources including:

  • Property records from tax assessment data

  • Data sets comprised of construction projects and reports

  • Data sets based on interpretation of aerial images

  • Business information data sets

  • Databases with information on specialty locations such as high-rise buildings

Developed specifically to improve exposure data quality for use in the insurance industry, the ExposureSource database provides extensive geographic coverage, with priority for U.S. commercial and residential properties that comprise a significant portion of total insured value in regions at high risk to catastrophic perils. Modeling catastrophe risk using complete and accurate exposure data enables insurers and reinsurers to reduce operational risk, obtain optimal reinsurance pricing and placement, improve rating assessments and capital allocation, and maintain better underwriting discipline and pricing.
